Have You Been Naughty or Nice (To Your Health) This Year?
We’re talking about your health that is. Have you been eating right, sleeping enough, drinking enough water and make sustained efforts at incorporating some fitness into your lifestyle?
As we start to countdown to the end of the year and the beginning of a new year, let’s take stock of how we have been treating ourselves and our health in the past year… Naughty or Nice? Let’s find out!
1. Have you been drinking up?
By drinking up, we mean the good ol’ plain water and not sodas, bubble teas, alcohol nor coffee. Our body consists of about 70% water, and we lose water when we sweat, cry, and even while we breathe1!
Though the standard guideline for daily water intake for adults is 8 glasses of water a day, it also depends on how active you are and where you live (i.e. your weather climate).
We can’t over emphasize how important it is to stay hydrated. Water is crucial for overall health and bodily functions. It is also paramount in maintaining good skin health, our skin thrives with proper hydration and a lack thereof may result in premature aging, such as the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and an overall dull complexion! Apart from drinking water, you should also eat foods that promote moisture in the body, such as fish, cucumbers and avocados. Also, you can choose to super-quench your skin with LAC Taut® Hydrate, specially formulated with key ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and grape seed extract to deeply hydrate and nourish skin from within.
2. Hours spent on electronic devices
Are you predominantly glued to your mobile devices? If you are, it might be worthwhile to make a conscious effort to put your phone away to reconnect with the people you love and the friends around you. Social disconnect aside, the prolonged exposure to blue light emitted from electronic devices can harm our eyes and has been shown to be a rising cause of macular degeneration.
If your work requires you to face the laptop or computer screen all day, a good tip would be to let your eyes rest every 20 minutes by looking 20 feet away in the distance for 20 seconds. This 203 tip helps to relieve eye strain and fatigue. In addition to allowing your eyes to rest at regular intervals, for those who experience eye fatigue, blurry vision or eye discomfort, consider taking an eye health supplement to protect the “windows to your soul” with GNC’s extensive range of eye health products that help with providing comfort and maintaining clear and sharp vision.
3. How many times do you exercise a week?
It is easy to give excuses and/or put off exercise. Exercise is not just for those looking to drop kilos or to look svelte, more importantly exercise stimulates healthy cardiovascular circulation, maintain muscle strength and helps to regulate good energy levels. For a healthy lifestyle, the ideal is to plan to exercise at least 3 times per week, or the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week2. Exercise also comes with additional benefits such as having an uplifting effect on your mood, maintaining healthy weight and keeping muscles and bones strong3! Be sure to stretch before and after exercise to warm up your muscles as it potentially helps to protect against injury. 4. Do you include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet?
According to the Health Promotion Board, we should be consuming at least 2 servings of vegetables and fruits daily. They provide us with many health benefits and should be included in our daily diet! For those who shun fruits and vegetables or simply forget to eat them on a daily basis, this can lead to nutritional deficiencies and as a result, one could be more prone to digestive issues such as constipation, as most fruits and vegetable contain cellulose (fibre) which help to alleviate constipation and eases the passage for our poop, but remember to drink more water as too much fibre may lead to constipation too!
If vegetables and fruits don’t typically appeal to you, try preparing them in different method, salads, stir-fried, juicing, etc. but if you still find it difficult to consume sufficient fruits and greens, try out supplements such as GNC SUPERFOODS Maximum Greens™ Complete, which is ideal for those who have an insufficient intake of vegetables and fruits. It contains a superior blend of 26 greens, fruits, herbs, antioxidants and enzymes that help to restore vitality!
5. How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
Living in our fast paced and busy society, it is no surprise that many of us are sleep deprived or has experienced some form of insomnia. Sleep experts recommend getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night for our body to function optimally. For all the night owls, be warned that habitual late nights or sleep deprivation may contribute to a higher mortality rate4.
There are many reasons why we are not getting enough rest, be it the daily stressors of life or conditions such as insomnia. However, it is important to try and develop a healthy sleep habit to help yourself feel better! For more truths on a good night’s sleep, click here.
